My dad was my favorite artist. He was my biggest influence and the most talented illustrator, photographer and graphic designer I have ever met. He always kept a sketchpad with him along with his trusty black ink pen to record life in the theater, a restaurant, the beach, or anywhere else he might have the pleasure of seeing other people. How he managed to draw so accurately with a permanent marker or a pen was beyond me! I try to be like my father and I do keep a sketchpad, but I need a good eraser along with a very forgiving pencil.
My dad was my favorite and most willing model. I must have been a teenager when I did this sketch of him. He took such pleasure in watching me learn and develop my own style. We would go to life drawing classes together on the weekends and he would encourage me in all ways a Dad as one's coach or mentor should. My father recently passed away at the age of 94. He enjoyed a long and very creative life. I will always wonder if he would approve of what I am working on. I still want to hear his opinion and his advice. It is with love for my father that I create anything at all.
THE OLDER FACE
I have always loved drawing portraits and always had a fascination with the human hand. My husband and I went to visit friends in Florida, and I was surrounded by the most beautiful faces, most of them well lined and well lived. Such character in an older face! Here are some of the sketches that filled my sketchpad during that trip. These are for you, Daddy.
